About Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer: Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer was established in the year 1952 and located in Parel, Mumbai. The origins of the ACTREC are rooted in the Indian Cancer Research Centre (ICRC), under the purview of the Ministry of Health, Government of India. ACTREC is the state of art of R&C wing of the Tata Memorial Centre and it comprises of, the Cancer Research Institue (CRI), Clinical Research Centre (CRC) and the Centre for Cancer Epidemiology (CEC), a setting that is unique in India and built and evolved with a vision to provide comprehensive cancer care to one and all, through its motto of excellence in services, education and research.

ACTREC work independently and in collaboration towards a common goal i.e. to advance research on all aspects of cancer, improve diagnosis, predict prognosis and treatment outcome of cancer patients, prolong their survival and ultimately sure cancer. The three centres have specific agendas, focus and unique capabilities. ACTREC has the mandate to function as a national centre for treatment, research and education in cancer. Scientists in CRI undertake multi-prolonged investigations into cancer biology, which address basic and translational research queries using human tumours, experimental animals and cells in culture, with an aim to provide the tools for chemoprevention, early diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.

In keeping with the overall mandate of the ACTREC, the CRC is focussing initially on pediatric cancers, brain tumours, head and neck cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, cancer genetics and technology evaluation. CRC nad Hospital is integral, vital constituents of ACTREC that are making considerable headway into clinical research while focusing on advanced modes od cancer therapy. The centre for cancer epidemiology is commissioned with a focus to assess and evaluate the cancer burden in the country. The clinicians, clinician-scientists and basic scientists of the centre are engaged in a large number of clinical trials and audits, as well as institutional, intramural and extramural projects. ACTREC continues its emphasis and focuses on its academic programs, prime amongst which is the Doctoral program.

Over the years, as the institute grew in repute and staff strength, with several new disciplines introduced into its repertoire, an acute shortage of space led to the search for a larger campus. The ACTREC project was conceptualized by the DAE in Nov 1983. Several new projects are on the verge of completion within ACTREC. This will transform ACTREC in the near future into a very large and niche cancer hospital with about 900 beds.  The projects are technologically and thematically complex including a Proton Beam Therapy Centre, a Centre to treat children's and haematological cancers, a Centre to treat solid tumours and an advanced centre for nuclear medicine. ACTREC promotes outstanding services through the evidence-based practice of oncology but also an emphasis on research that is affordable, innovative and relevant to the needs of the country.
