About Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC): Amdavad Municipal Corporation was incorporated in July 1950 and located at Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India. Under the Bombay Provincial Corporation Act (1949), AMC is established and responsible for the civic infrastructure of the city of Ahmedabad. The corporation is headed by a Municipal Commissioner, an IAS officer who is appointed by the government of Gujarat. The local self-government of the city, namely Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, emerged as the first people's representative council or democratic body in India. This Institution was unique and rich with its diversity since its inception.
Ahmedabad had set an example of an autonomous body administering the city during the British rule for the first time. Ahmedabad Municipality was founded in 1873, which became a borough municipality in 1926 and was upgraded to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation in 1950. As per section 63 and 66 of the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act, the AMC is responsible for certain obligatory and discretionary services. Some of the obligatory services are erection of the boundary of city defining limits, watering, scavenging and cleaning of all public streets and places, sewage services, fire services, health, and medical services, maintenance of monuments and open spaces and many other services.
For administrative purposes, the city is divided into 5 zones i.e. Central, East, West, North, and South. In 2006, a new zone has been formed, named the 'New West Zone'. The area covered in this zone was formerly governed by the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority. The vision of AMC is to be 'Vibrant, productive, harmonious, sustainable and environmentally friendly, clean and livable city having a responsive certainly local government offering its citizens a good quality of life'. AMC was the first large city in India to have implemented property tax reforms and also undertaken several novel initiatives like issuing municipal bonds, environmental improvement, etc.
AMC has faced growth challenges effectively and provided urban services at a level significantly higher than the national averages, making it one of the top tier service providers in the country. The recent focus on city transportation, encroachment removal, and cleanliness had been maintained with impressive improvements over the past. The Central Government declared this city as 'Mega City' in 2005. AMC's service delivery is matched by its high quality of governance, which has set benchmarks for other municipal corporations in the country.
