About Atomic Minerals Directorate for  Exploration and Research: Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research was incorporated in the year 1948 and is the oldest unit of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and followed by the creation of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).AMD was created on July 29, 1949, as 'Rare Minerals Survey Unit' with headquarter in New Delhi. Then it was renamed first as 'Raw Materials Division' and later it was 'Atomic Minerals Division' in 1958, with its headquarters in Hyderabad, Telangana. AMD commenced its operations on Oct 3, 1950, with a nucleus of 17 Geoscientists which has grown to 2354 personnel as on 11 Jan 2016.

AMD mandates to identify and evaluate uranium resources required for the successful implementation of Atomic Energy program of the country. To implement this important task, investigations are taken up across the length and breadth of the country from Regional Exploration & Research Centres located at New Delhi, Bangalore, Jamshedpur, Shillong, Jaipur, Nagpur and Hyderabad. The Directorate is presently employing latest technology viz. Time Domain EM system along with gamma-ray spectrometer and magnetometer for airborne geographical surveys, and multi-disciplinary field operations and drilling activities by induction of state of the art hydrostatic rigs. The laboratories, to support the field investigations, are equally well equipped with latest facilities.

The responsibilities and duties of AMD is to take steps as may be necessary from time to time to protect the country in connection with atomic energy by the exercise of the powers conferred on the Government of India by the provisions of the Atomic Energy Act, to survey the territories of the Indian Dominion for location of useful minerals in connection with atomic energy and to promote research in their own laboratories and to sub subsidize such research in existing institutions and universities. AMD has exclusive right to buy private mine owners, prescribed minerals produced incidental to mining of other economic minerals at prices fixed by Government from time to time.

Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research also has exclusive right to conduct exploration for uranium, and other prescribed substances such as thorium, beryllium, lithium, zirconium, niobium, tantalum, rare earth and other like ilmenite and rutile. AMD carry out Research & Development on designing and fabrication of radiometric instruments, development of new analytical techniques for multi-elemental determination at trace and ultra-trace levels and petro mineralogical characterization and mineral beneficiation of radioactive ores. In recognization to significant contributions made in different fields, scientists of AMD were conferred with different awards instituted by Department of Atomic Energy, Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India and many other awards and honours.
