About Assam Police: Assam Police was incorporated in the year 1826 and its headquarters is located at Ulubari in the state of Assam. Assam Police functions under the direct control of Department of Home Affairs, Government of Assam and it is the law enforcement agency for the state of Assam in India. The Assam Police is headed by Director General of Police and the Assam Police forces are organized into Police ranges, headed by an Inspector General of Police (IG) or Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), who control several Police Districts. Each Polic District is headed by the Superintendent of Police (SP) and SP is assisted by one or more additional SPs and DSPs. The mission of Assam Police is to maintain the integrity and discipline of the highest order insincere performance of duties in accordance with the law and the Constitution and respect the rights of citizens as guaranteed by it.
Assam State Police force also maintains its own Reserve Armed Police Force, Special Armed Police and Armed Police, which is responsible for emergencies and crowd control issues. The armed constabulary does not usually come into contact with the general public unless they are assigned to VIP duty, Insurgency operation, Riot control or to maintain law and order during fairs, festivals, athletic events, elections, and natural disasters. They are generally activated only on orders from the Rank of DIG and higher-level authorities. All the equipment for the Assam Police are manufactured indigenously by the Indian Ordnance Factories, Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
Some of the branches like the Bureau of Investigation, Special Branch, Criminal Investigation Department (C.I.D), Assam Police Radio Organization etc. were established to meet the increasing demands of law and order and also of a peculiar situation obtained in the state, such as the large-scale infiltration of the foreign nationals from across the border causing a serious imbalance in the demographic structure of the state and threatening national security. Assam Police Battalion personnel are engaged in the onerous task of helping the district police in maintaining law and order, besides guarding the vital installations round the clock and also engaged in other static security duties. Many awards and medals achieved by the Officers of Assam Police for their Outstanding & Meritorious Service.
The objective of the Assam Police is to support the Law and Order enforcing agencies by providing reliable, secure and high-speed communication towards effective maintenance of law and order, prevention and detection of crimes and criminals, provide communication anywhere in the state in matters of public importance and during natural calamities like earthquake, flood, cyclone, etc. and to provide communication to other departments of the Government of Assam. Assam Police strives to build up a strong Police-Public bond in order to encourage community participation in law enforcement and promote harmony and spirit of brotherhood amongst all segments of society, transcending religious, linguistic social and regional diversities and to remove practices derogatory to the dignity of women and disadvantageous sections of society.
