About the Centre for Management Development, Kerala (CMD Kerala): The Centre for Management Development was incorporated in August 1979 and is located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The centre was established as per the recommendations of the Committee on Management Development of Public Enterprises in Kerala and it is sponsored by the Government of Kerala as an autonomous, professional, registered body. The governing Board consists of representatives from Industry, University, Government of Kerala and Professional Management Associations. The management development programme for the state can be achieved only through the initiative of collective efforts of government, the joint, private and public sector undertakings and universities.
The role of the proposed Management Development Centre will be oriented more towards planned practical training. The Management Development Centre may start with a six to nine months training programme for fresh management trainees selected from the universities and professional institutions and also short-term programmes. The faculty members should be recruited very carefully. The various tasks that could be undertaken by the Centre are the Organising training programmes, Assisting companies in the selection personnel, Studying organisational and managerial problems of the companies and Providing management consultancy services.
The specific objectives of the centre are to promote & enrich management policies and practices in the manufacturing, services and development, to augment and develop entrepreneurial potential in the state through an integrated identification-training support package, to enhance the decision-making skills and competence of practising managers and key personnel in the public, private and non-governmental sectors. Also to provide assistance to governmental/voluntary/corporate agencies for strengthening management of developmental programmes and projects in rural and urban areas, through research studies, consulting, training programmes and advisory service and to contribute to professionalizing management nu developing a pool of young management professionals.
The centre takes up research in different areas. Over the past few years, the Centre has built up special competency for undertaking evaluation studies including process evaluations and cost-benefit evaluations, Impact Assessment of various developmental and other programmes, concurrent monitoring of the different schemes being implemented in the country to give continuous feedback. The centre has the requisite expertise in data collection through different methods, data analysis, interpretation and reporting and the centre undertake research work in areas like Entrepreneurship and Marketing. The mission of the Centre is to contribute to the societal, development of professional managers and the introduction of effective management practices in organizations.
