About Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO): Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was established in the year 1958 and its headquarters is located in New Delhi, India. DRDO is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India and is an agency of the Government of India, charged with the military's research and development. DRDO was formed by the merger of the Technical Development Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production of the Indian Ordnance Factories with the Defence Science Organisation.
The organisation includes around 5,000 scientists belonging to the Defence Research and Development Service (DRDS) and about 25,000 other scientific, technical and supporting personnel. DRDO is a network of 50 laboratories engaged in developing defence technologies covering various disciplines like aeronautics, electronics, combat vehicles, engineering systems, missiles, naval systems, information system and agriculture etc. DRDO Chief called for more collaboration with the industry, private sector, research and education institutes including IITs and NITs to become technology research and production leader, reduce reliance on the imports and increase self-reliance.
DRDO has firm determination to make the nation strong and self-reliant in terms of science and technology, especially in the field of military technologies. DRDO's pursuit of self-reliance and successful indigenous development and production of strategic systems and platform such as Agni and Prithvi series of missiles, a wide range of radars and electronic warfare systems etc. have given quantum jump to India's military might, generating effective deterrence and providing crucial leverage. Several major projects for the development are on hand and significant achievements have already been made in several such technologies and the source of strength is science-drives the nation in peace and war.
