About Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Assam (GMCH): Gauhati Medical College & Hospital was established on 20th Sep 1960 and is located at Guwahati in Assam, India. Dr John Berry White, MRCS, a British surgeon of the East India Company established a medical school named 'Berry White Medical School' in Assam. With the increasing demands for health care and health education, the need for more medical colleges in Assam was felt. Thus, the state government of Assam decided to have a second medical college in Assam. GMCH is also a health care institution and provides medical education at undergraduate, postgraduate and super-speciality levels.

GMCH has enjoyed a prestigious status in the country for its academic pursuits and patients care, and a referral centre for speciality and super speciality treatment. The committee recommended Ulubari for Gauhati Medical College and Ghungoor for Silchar Medical College to be the permanent sites. The state government decided to start the colleges with preclinical classes in at Jalukbari, Guwahati with some of the students for Gauhati Medical College and Silchar Medical College as a twin college. There was no provision for staff and students at Jalukbari and staff members were appointed gradually. Some vacated houses of the Civil Surgeon's Office, and also some vacated houses of the Engineering Institute were acquired where accommodations were provided to the staff and students.

The University offers a five and half-year MBBS degree, which includes a one-year internship and also offers both degree MD/MS (3year) and Diploma (2year) postgraduate medical courses, DM and MCh courses are also offered. Paraclinical and clinical departments were started in the Civil Hospital Campus, Ulubari Maternity Home, Emigration Hospital and T.B. Hospital at Birubari, Guhawati as and when they became available. Junior Doctor Association of GMCH is the representative of the postgraduate students and the internees (PRCAs). Gauhati Medical College Students Union (GMCSU) is the representative body of the students and GMCSU was formed in 1961. Currently, student politics is rather non-existent in college.

The Gauhati Medical College was inspected by the Medical Council of India and there were inspections also by the Gauhati University, to which GMC is affiliated. In Feb 1969, postgraduate started in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, Surgery etc. and General Medical Council of U.K. recognized the bachelor's degree of Gauhati Medical College in 1969, thereby enabling the graduates to pursue higher studies. The faculty and residents of the departments are actively involved in various research and academic activities besides performing their routine clinical duties in an exemplary manner.
