About Garden Research Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE): The origin of Garden Research Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) was founded in the year 1884 and located in Kolkata, West Bengal. GRSE was incorporated as 'Garden Reach Workshops Limited' on 26th February 1934, under the Companies Act, 1913 with the Registrar of Companies, Calcutta and it was renamed as 'Garden Reach Workshops Private Limited' on 5th Nov 1957. Later, the name was again changed to 'Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited on 31st Dec 1976. The company was nationalised by the Government of India in 1960.
A coherent set of values such as Fairness, Generosity, Pursuit of Excellence, Community Involvement, Innovation and concern for Employee's Welfare etc. have been adopted and evolved by GRSE, as a standard to guide the organizational behaviour in preferences in all situations. The objectives of the GRSE are to establish a self-reliant design house, productivity improvement, quality improvement, business development through the concerted marketing efforts, marketing deck machinery items, portable steel bridges and diesel engines, human resource development and CSR & Sustainability. GRSE is also engaged in engine production and other engineering activities. The engineering division manufactures deck machinery items, pre-fabricated portable steel bridges and marine pumps.
Over the years, GRSE has been credited with many firsts in the Indian shipbuilding industry. GRSE became the first and the only Indian shipyard to build and subsequently deliver a fleet tanker to the Indian Navy and a hovercraft to the Indian Coast Guard. GRSE continues to associate with several technology firms in the industry like MTU and other international/domestic organizations for its different business segments such as diesel engines and deck machinery, which has added to its credibility in the international market. GRSE targets to continue its efforts on indigenization proportions of over 90% in all its ships slated for future delivery.
GRSE was awarded the Miniratna status, with accompanying financial and operational autonomy in Sep 2006 and it is first Indian Shipyard to build 100 warships.
