About Jammu and Kashmir Police (JK Police): Jammu and Kashmir Police (JK Police) was established in the year 1873 and its headquarters is located at Peerbagh in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir Police is the law enforcement agency and having primary responsibilities in law enforcement and investigation within Jammu and Kashmir in India. It was in the year 1873 AD that formal Police force came into existence with one Police officer Known as Kotwal and 14 Thanedars for Srinagar City. This nuclear force would control crime and take care of law and order situations with the help of Chowkidars and 'Harkars'.
Jammu and Kashmir Police comes under the direct control of Department of Home Affairs, Government of Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir Police is headed by Director General of Police (DGP), who is always a senior IPS officer. Jammu and Kashmir Police also work with the Indian Army, the Central Reserve Police Force, and other Paramilitary forces of India to keep the union territory secure from incursions from Pakistan. The strength of Police in J&K in the year 1889-90 was just 1040, which further rose to 1570 in the year 1903 and forty years later, in 1943-44, the strength of J&K Police was 3179 its strength has gone to more than 83000 strong at present.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police received the highest number of 108 gallantry medals on the occasion of Republic Day, followed by 76 medals by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Union Home Ministry announced on Saturday. A total of 290 gallantry awards were announced. Overall, 1,040 police medals have been declared that includes 93 distinguished service medals and 657 meritorious service medals.
