About Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC): Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation was established on 12th Sep 1948 and located in Bangalore, Karnataka. KSRTC is a state-owned road transportation company in the state of Karnataka in India and a Public Sector Corporation under the Ministry of Transport of the State Government of Karnataka. Corporation has the largest fleet of Volvo buses among state-owned transport companies in India. It is wholly-owned by the Government of Karnataka. Presently, the corporation excludes it's subsidiary's it covers seventeen districts in state under its operational jurisdiction. It stands 5th amongst STUs in the Nation by size(excludes its subsidiaries).
KSRTC was divided to form Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). In Nov 1997, another new road transport corporation called North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) was formed to cater to the transportation needs of North-Western parts of Karnataka. KSRTC operates with a total fleet off 24,138 buses and corporation services cover 92% villages in Karnataka. KSRTC was the first state transport corporation to introduce Volvo B7RLE low floor city buses in India in 2005. At present, KSRTC operates TATA, Ashok Leyland, Eicher Motors, Volvo, Mercedes Benz, Scania buses under the A/C (Airavat) services.
Along with the rapid progress of Karnataka in all spheres of activity, KSRTC has emerged as the best organisation in meeting the aspirants of Kannadigas and the people of neighbouring states of Karnataka. There were 281 permanent and 11 bus stations with 337 wayside shelters and 1009 pick-up shelters. The total number of employees deployed was 59033 and the staff ration per schedule km of 31.10 lakh km. The total number of inter-state routes operated by the Corporation on a reciprocal basis with the neighbouring state was 602. KSRTC is the first Public transport organization in India to deploy the Electronic Ticketing Machine on 15th August 2004, with several applications embedded in it.
