About the National Informatics Centre (NIC): The National Informatics Centre (NIC) was incorporated in the year 1976 and its headquarters is located in New Delhi, India. NIC is an attached office under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and it is credited with helping the Indian Government embrace IT in the 1990s. NIC provides the infrastructure to help support the delivery of Government IT services and delivery of some of the initiatives of Digital India. NIC has rich experience in providing ICT and eGovernance support to the Government for the last 4 decades and bridges the digital divide.
NIC has emerged as a promoter of digital opportunities for sustainable development. NIC spearheaded 'Informatics-Led-Development' by implementing ICT applications in social and public administration and facilitates electronic delivery of services to the government, business, citizen and government employee. NIC is closely associated with the government in different aspects of governance by establishing a nationwide state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure and services for Central Government, State Governments, UT Administrations, Districts and other Government bodies. in 2018, NIC opened its fourth data centre in Bhubaneshwar to complement its existing data centres in New Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune.
NIC offers a wide range of services which includes multi-gigabit nationwide networks NICNET, NKN, National Data Centres, National Cloud, pan India VC infrastructure, Command and Control Centre, multi-layered GIS-based platform, Domain Registration and Webcast. This plays a significant role in delivering citizen-centric e-services. NIC maintains the india.gov.in. The portal contains the COnstitution of India and claims to have a design objective to a single point to access the information and services of the Government of India. A large number of Government initiatives such as Swachh Bharat Mission, My-Gov, e-Hospital, fertilizer distribution, e-Courts, e-Transport etc. have been completely managed using digital platforms developed by NIC.
The major activities undertaken by the NIC are setting up of ICT Infrastructure, Implementation of National and State Level e-Governance Projects/Products, Consultancy to the Government departments, Research and Development. NIC has been continuously working towards meaningful use of emerging technologies in governance across all levels of government and received eOffice implementation Award 2020, NIC's Antyodaya Saral Haryana project received the GOLD award at 23rd National Conference on e-Governance 2019-20 and also received many prestigious awards. Digital file usage in NIC is now more than 85%. The main objective of NIC is to focus on the study of new technology, explore and experiment their use in governance.
