About the National Physical Laboratory (NPL): National Physical Laboratory was incorporated on 4th Jan 1947 and situated in New Delhi. The National Physical Laboratory was conceptualized in 1943 by the Governing Body of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the NPL is the National Metrology Institute of India and a Premier Research Laboratory in the field of Physical Sciences. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India, laid the foundation stone for the laboratory and it was one of the first National Laboratory to be set-up under the CSIR and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and then Deputy Prime Minister of India inaugurated the NPL building on 21st Jan 1950.
Over the years, the Laboratory has more than realized its primary mandate as the keeper of Measurement Standards for the nation while also substantially expanding its research activities to emerge as a leading national institution for research in a whole gamut of areas in the Physical Sciences. Each modernized country, including India, has a National Metrological Institute (NMI), which maintains the standards of measurements. This responsibility has been given to the National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. NPL is also involved in research and also have section working on the development of biosensors.
The objectives of NPL is to establish, maintain continuously by research, for the benefit of the nation, to identify and conduct, after due consideration, research in areas of Physics which are most appropriate to the needs of the nation and for advance of the field and to assist industries, national and other agencies in their development tasks by precision measurements, calibration, development of devices, processes and other allied problems related to physics. Laboratory's research & development is currently is divided into the Centre of Materials, Centre of Radio and Atmosphere Sciences and Centre of Metrology.
The main aim of the laboratory is to strengthen and advance physics-based research and development for the overall development of science and technology in the country. Scientific and Administrative Support Divisions including Sophisticated and Analytical Instruments provide the necessary support to the R & D activities. To ensure high-quality measurement, the laboratory is engaged in coordinating an inter-laboratory programme on planning, preparation and dissemination of certified Indian reference materials also named as Bharatiya Nirdeshak Dravayas BNDs) and NPL has received Oustanding Achievement Award, CSIR-Young Scientist Award-2013, DST Lockheed Martin Innovation Award and many more prestigious awards.
