The National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), originally known as the National Technical Facilities Organisation (NTFO), is a highly specialised technical intelligence gathering agency. NTRO also includes National Institute of Cryptology Research and Development (NICRD), which is first of its kind in Asia.
The NTRO acts as a super-feeder agency for providing technical intelligence to other agencies on internal and external security while the agency does not affect the working of technical wings of various intelligence agencies, including those of the Indian Armed Forces. The organisation does hi-tech surveillance jobs, including satellite monitoring, terrestrial monitoring, internet monitoring, considered vital for the national security apparatus. The officials have identified countries from where such gadgets could be produced but refused to reveal them due to 'security and other implications'.
The agency develops technology capabilities in aviation and remote sensing, data gathering and processing, cybersecurity, cryptology systems, strategic hardware and software development and strategic monitoring. The National Critical Infrastructure Protection Centre, an agency under the control of the National Technical Research Organisation, has been created to monitor, intercept and assess threats to crucial infrastructure and other vital installations from intelligence gathered using sensors and platforms which includes satellites, underwater buoys, drones, VSAT-terminal locators and fibre-optic cable nodal tap points.
India has been one of the most proactive members of a secretive US National Security Agency (NSA)-led 10-member counter-terrorism platform called SIGINT Seniors Pacific (SSPAC) for the last 10 years. The NTRO will operate India's sole spy ship, following its completion of sea trials at Vishakhapatnam. Induction of two new units for Very Long Range Tracking Radar |(VLRTR) systems were accorded by Government of India under MoU between NTRO and iAF for realizing Missile Monitoring System for detection of spaceborne threats in aid od Ballistic Missile Defence. Indian Express reported that NTRO has become the first Indian Intelligence Agency to be subjected to the ignominy of an audit by the CAG and an investigation by the CVC.
