About Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL): Steel Authority of India Limited was incorporated on 19th Jan 1954 and its headquarters is located in New Delhi, India. SAIL is an Indian state-owned steel making company and also a public sector undertaking, owned and operated by Government of India. SAIL traces its origin to the Hindustan Steel Limited (HSL), initially designed to manage only one plant that was coming up at Rourkela. For Bhilai and Durgapur Steel Plants, the preliminary work was done by the Iron ad Steel Ministry. From April 1957, the supervision and control of these two steel plants were also transferred to Hindustan Steel. The Ministry of Steel and Mines drafted a policy statement to evolve a new model for managing industry. The policy statement was presented to the Parliament on 02nd Dec 1972.
On the basis of creating a holding company to manage inputs and outputs under one roof was mooted, which led to the formation of the Steel Authority of India Limited. The company incorporated on 24th Jan 1973 with an authorised capital of Rs.2,000 crore, was made responsible for managing five integrated steel plants at Bhilai, Bokaro, Durgapur, Rourkela and Burnpur, the Alloy Steel Plant and the Salem Steel Plant. In 1978, SAIL was restructured as an operating company. Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha set up with German collaboration, Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh set up with Soviet collaboration, Durgapur Steel Plant at Durgapur set up with British collaboration.
Bokaro Steel Plant in Jharkhand set up with Soviet collaboration, IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur equipped with the Largest Blast Furnace of the Country, modernized in 2015. Alloy Steel Plant, Durgapur supplies to the Indian Ordnance Factories. A joint venture between SAIL and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) is engaged in power and steam generation and supplies power and steam to SAIL's Bokaro Steel Plant located at Bokaro for meeting the process requirement of BSL.
