About TANGEDCO: Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) was formed on 1st Nov 2010 under the section 131 of the Electricity Act of 2003 and located in Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu. TANGEDCO is an electrical power generation and distribution public sector undertaking that is owned by the Government of Tamil Nadu and it is the subsidiary of TNEB Limited. It is the successor to the erstwhile Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the electricity board's generation and distribution wings are its nucleus.
To satisfy the energy needs of the state, TANGEDCO has an installed capacity of conventional energy sources of TANGEDCO is 18,732.78 MW, which includes its own state projects, shares from the Central Generating Stations (CGS) and Private Power Purchase. Also, the State has installations in renewable energy sources like a windmill, solar, biomass and cogeneration up to 10,479.61 MW. TANGEDCO has fully exploited the hydroelectric potential available in the state and presently it has four major coal-based Thermal Power Stations and four gas-based power plants and also established one Environment Management Cell at its Headquarters.
An efficient distribution network is needed for effectively utilizing the energy that is generated and TANGEDCO has an efficient distribution network that has grown over the years. Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutkarana Yojana (RGGVY) with the goal of creating electricity infrastructure to all un-electrified villages / un-electrified hamlets provide access to electricity to all households and implementation in Tamil Nadu has already been completed. The total consumers being served in the State as in the year of 2018 is approx 288.09 lakh.
The Research and Development wing of TANGEDCO provides diagnostic testing pertaining to the reliability of equipment performance and prevent equipment failure and carries out several important Research Studies in the Power Sector that are beneficial not only to improve its own Operation & Maintenance but for all utilities engaged in Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution. Many of the Research studies are fully funded by the Ministry of Power/Government of India and the study completion reports with conclusions and recommendations are available with TANGEDCO or Research and Development.
