About Travancore Titanium Products Limited (TTPL): Travancore Titanium Products Limited was incorporated on 18th Dec 1946 and its headquarters is located at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. It was established to produce pigment grade Titanium dioxide from ilmenite which is abundantly available as placer deposits on beaches near Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram. The company which started production at a modest rate of 5 tonnes per day, increased its capacity in stages to the present level of 40-45 tonnes per day. TTPL became a State Public Sector unit in 1960, with the Government of Kerala owning 97.55% of the shares.
Travancore Titanium Products Limited started production of Titanium Dioxide through sulphate Route in 1951. TTPL was the only unit producing Anatase grade Titanium Dioxide Pigment, in India. The company also installed its own sulphuric acid plant to produce acid for captive consumption. In 1960, the Government of Kerala took over the management of the company. Now the administrative control is vested with the Department of industries, Government of Kerala. In 1963, the capacity of Titanium Dioxide produced was further increased to 18 tonnes per day with a commensurate addition to the sulphuric acid production.
The government approved the expansion program for producing 50 tons per day in 1967. The next expansion program to 24,500 tons per annum in 1973. A modern sulphuric acid plant was commissioned in 1996, which utilizes the tail gas recycling DCDA (Double Catalysis Double Absorption) technology. An alkali scrubbing system is incorporated in the plant, and this, in turn, helps to keep sulphur dioxide emissions from the factory well within permissible limits. Research & Development undertake a quality improvement program in line with customer quality requirements and research functions involve process research and new product development. Today the company is one of the leading manufacturers of the magic white pigment in the country producing nearly 60 tonnes per day.
In 2003, TTPL started direct marketing & entered into the export market and certified with ISO 9001:2000 in 2004 and ISO 9001:2008 in 2010. For about 50 years, TTPL was one of the profit-making Public Sector Undertaking of Government of Kerala. Every year the company declares a dividend of around 20percent. TTP is contributing crores of rupees to the State exchequer by way of sales tax, other duties, and levies.
