About Western Railway: Western Railway was formed on 5th Nov 1951 and its headquarters is located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Western Railway was created by the merger of several state-owned railways, including the Bombay, Baroda, and Central Indian Railway (BB&CI), and the Saurashtra Railway, Rajputana Railway and Jaipur State Railway. The narrow gauge lines of Cutch State Railway was also merged into it in 1951. Western Railway is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railway and is among the busiest railway networks in India. Western Railway serves entire Gujarat, parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and comprises of six divisions viz. Mumbai, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Ratlam, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar.
The Western Coast of India served by Western Railway has a number of ports, a most important among them being Kandla, Hajira, Surat, Dahej, Mundra, Okha, Veraval, Porbandar, Bhavnagar in Gujarat state and Mumbai in Maharashtra. Of more than 3000 services run in Mumbai 1367 services which include 1313 twelve car services and fifty-four 15 car services are run by Western Railway with a phenomenal frequency of 3 minutes during peak hours. Western Railway carries more than 3.5 million passengers per day.
Western Railway has opened Heritage Gallery at its headquarters building at Churchgate, Mumbai and the gallery has recently been renovated. It is a collection of various models of BB&CI era, the precursor of Western Railway. The gallery gives an insight into the development of lines in the Western Region of India. The Gallery is open for the public free of cost during working hours and on special occasions. Western Railway has planned several celebrations to mark the occasion. These include exhibitions, a compendium of BB&CI Magazine, Brochures, Renovation of Heritage Gallery, Curio Shop, etc.
Western Railway was the first in the world to start an exclusive Ladies Special Train between Churchgate and Vihar. Western Railway vision is to provide better security services, Indian Railway is further installing more CCTV cameras to keep an eye on any unsocial/illegal activity and to improve safety in trains. Western Railway launches a massive program of railway station modernization to make railway travel a pleasant experience for the common citizens. On 28th Nov 1864, BB&CI railway's first train from Mumbai was flagged off from Grant Road Station. Since then the city of Mumbai has grown with Western Railway and so has Western Railway evolved as a lifeline of the city.
