Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited(GSECL) was established in August 1993 under the Act, 1956. The Head Quarter of the GSCEL is located in Vadodara, India. Approximately there are 10 Power stations under Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited. On 29th May 2004, the GSCEL was ensured as State Generating Poer Plant of Gujarat State.

GSECL is a completely owned subsidiary that efforts to reorganize the Power Sector and also deploy resources for developing generating capacity & improving quality and cost of existing. The Government of Gujarat (GoG) has specified GSECL as IPP (Independent Power Procedure) to accept new power projects. So, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited has started its activities in the Power Generation Field and commercial operation in 1998. At the Power Stations in Gandhinagar #5, Wanakbori #7, Utran GBPS & Dhuvaran CCPP(up to 31st March 2005) the GSCEL has inaugurated their operations.

An existing company, GETCO has been combined with the GSCEL for Electricity Transmission. And the Network Distribution in the Gujarat State was divided among 4 distribution companies (Northern, Southern, Western & Central parts of the state).  Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) is the single bulk buyer & supplier among distribution companies, which carries trading functions.
